Invented in the Netherlands in the early 17th century, supposedly by the Dutchman Hans Lippershey, the telescope was further developed by Galileo Galilei strengthening his conviction that Earth and all other planets revolve around the sun. Next, the Englishman Isaac Newton developed the telescope further. The telescope is not only THE icon of science. During the centuries it has played an important role in shaping how we see our surroundings and how we see ourselves.
Your assignment is to write an article with a picture slide show that tells the history of the telescope to a non-scientific audience. The pictures can be researched online (the use of CC-licensed images and photos is allowed). The language will be Dutch or German (your choice).
The article with a picture slideshow is part of the project "Heirlooms", in which we present the achievements, inventions and phenomena in our everyday life and culture which go back to inter-European exchange or have their origin in Europe as a whole - and show that in Europe culture has in many ways always been "European" and not "national". It will be published on our website. Here you can also find examples from this project: https://www.goethe.de/ins/nl/nl/kul/ifo/erb.html
