External Communications Manager

Project description:
Communications and Marketing is responsible for formulating and implementing the
marketing, communications and press strategy for RBS in the Netherlands.
As for External Communications, our objective is to support RBS NL to fulfill its
strategic and financial ambitions in all client segments and product areas through
positioning RBS and its offer in the Dutch market. We design and deliver the NL wide
marketing communications and press strategy and initiatives – defining messages and
managing a mix of activities – that build engagement of RBS NL clients and prospects,
leading to increased levels of positive awareness, business retention and development.

Activities:
• Create and manage a prioritised press and marketing communications plan across RBS NL,
with a strong emphasis on pro-active press relations
• Manage the execution of marketing communications and press activities for NL -
including advertising, press planning and relationship building, sales support materials
and the internet portal
• Be the main contact for press in the Netherlands and handle press issues
• Develop pro-active press relations
• Make sure RBS NL experts are trained and properly prepared to talk to the press
• Monitor press coverage
• Manage the country internet portal for RBS NL
• Safeguard RBS guidelines and branding across all communications tools
• Maintain business credentials specific to RBS NL
• Develop strong understanding of the clients and products of RBS NL, and our
competition - both local and global
• Utilise the broader RBS marketing functions appropriately as a source of expertise and
leverage of divisional and group assets relevant to NL clients
• Link closely and flexibly with colleagues across the NL Communications & Marketing
team to design and deliver projects where required

Business knowledge
Deliverables:
• Press strategy and plan for RBS NL
• Marketing communications strategy and plan for RBS NL
• Pro-active press relations, regular contacts with the target press and RBS press
events
• Handling of any press issues, inquiries
• Press releases
• Media training through supplier
• Daily press cuttings through supplier
• Local advertising initiatives – usually as part of a global campaign
• Internet portal upgrades and updates
• Implementation of and safeguarding of central branding guidelines/templates, ensuring
all produced materials are in line with branding
• Direct client mailings
• Credentials specific to RBS NL – awards and recognition, league table positions
Scope of role:
• Overall plan and strategy will require business approval as well as global C&M
approval; the role holder will make numerous tactical decisions within design and
execution of marketing communications and press projects once the principal agreement has
been obtained
• Determination of when to use own resources versus involvement of (a) linked marketing
functions outside RBS NL or (b) external agencies
• Required to make most of the decisions in the pro-active press relations area as long
as in line with central policies and guidelines
Required technical skills
• 5 years plus press/ marketing communications experience in an international banking
environment, of which a minimum of 3 years recent experience in/with Dutch press related
role
• Experience with the Dutch financial press
• Proven strong written and verbal communication skills, in English and Dutch
• Experience in B2B environment with a service company
• Strategic thinking combined with hands-on attitude
• Management of vendors/ agencies involved in external communication
• Media trained
• Strong relationship building skills to include front-line client facing staff
• Financial services background
• Prior experience within matrix organisations
• Understanding of the Financial Services industry in regard to trends and developments
• Market research awareness
• Education to degree level; qualification/professional development focus on
communication and marketing
• Media/spokesperson training
• Skills in MS Office products, particularly Word, Powerpoint and Excel
• Degree in Economics or Finance
• Media trained
• Content management system experience
• Eye for design/branding
